[ARCHIVED] Flooding Update: Temporary Closure of Some Parks and Open Space

More flooded parks February 2019

This week's flooding impacted the City's parks and open space system. Badger Park, Railroad Park, and Fitch Mountain Park and Open Space Preserve remain closed. Staff completed a preliminary assessment of the damage on Thursday. The following is an update:

Railroad Park: Flood waters covered most of the park during the event. Flooding took out sections of the river wall fencing along with sections of retaining wall and eroded other areas of the park. Flooding also left a 2-3” layer of muck throughout the park. Additional assessment of the retaining walls, stairways, and other repairs needs to occur. THE PARK IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Badger Park: Flood waters covered the entire park during the event. Flooding took out most of the play structure’s surfacing material, tossed belongings around in the community garden, and left a 1” layer of muck throughout most of the park. We anticipate the parking lot, play structure, and patio area cleanup happening Friday, March 1. If it rains as predicted this weekend it should help with some of the muck on the trails and turf area. THE PARK IS CLOSED. The park could reopen early next week depending on conditions. The play structure will need to remain closed until surfacing material can be delivered; we are waiting on confirmation from the supplier for this date.

Fitch Mountain Park and Open Space Preserve: The storm had the most impact on the open space preserve. There are two major slides blocking the trail/access road completely, and three minor slides in other areas. In addition, there is significant erosion throughout the trail/access road system. Additional assessment is needed to determine how best to address these issues. THE OPEN SPACE IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Badger Park, Railroad Park, and the Fitch Mountain Open Space Preserve are closed until further notice due to damage sustained from the recent storm. Parks Staff are assessing the full extent of the damage and will begin repair and maintenance work so we can safely reopen the parks. Please stay out of closed areas during this time. Stay tuned for progress updates on park conditions. If you have any questions, please contact the Community Services main office at (707) 431-3301.
